Durante l'ultimo episodio di WWE Monday Night Raw, nel main event, Roman Reigns ha sconfitto Sheamus, difendendo con successo il WWE World Heavyweight Title. Al termine del match Mr. McMahon, arbitro speciale del precedente incontro, ha annunciato che il main event del PPV Royal Rumble, che si terrà il prossimo 24 gennaio, il tradizionale 30-man Royal Rumble match, sarà valido per il WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
