Social Networking Pays Off: Carlos Condit vs. B.J. Penn in the Works for UFC Event in October

It appears Carlos Condit and B.J. Penn are on a collision course for a bout in October.

The power of social networking was at work on Monday with messages being exchanged back and forth between Condit, Penn and fellow top ten welterweight Jon Fitch.

When it was all said and done, Condit issued a challenge to Penn, who promptly accepted. Now the UFC is on board as well.

“The people have spoken,” wrote Condit in a message to Penn. “They want to see us scrap, let’s give ‘em what they asked for.”

It didn’t take long for Penn to answer back.

“Yup, let’s do it October 29th,” Penn said.

This is a fight the UFC is getting behind because they are in the process of working out a date and time for Condit and Penn to face each other.

Speaking to MMAWeekly.com on Monday, Condit’s manager, Malki Kawa of First Round Management, said that UFC matchmaker Joe Silva is in the process working out a fight between the two welterweight contenders.

While both fighters and the UFC are targeting a date in October, the event remains to be determined.

“The fight is going to happen, but this is a main event fight,” Kawa stated. “The UFC might have something planned, we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Sources have indicated to MMAWeekly.com that the UFC may be working on a third event in October, somewhere between the two shows currently on the schedule already.

Right now the UFC has plans for UFC 136 on October 8 in Houston, as well as UFC 137 on October 29 in Las Vegas with Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz headlining.

While no main event has been confirmed for the Houston show, all signs are pointing towards the lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard leading the way.

UFC 137 has the main event fight between St-Pierre and Diaz, but no co-main event fight at this time.

If there is a third event in October, it’s currently not on the books with the UFC, but a UFC Fight Night or something else could be possible.

The hardest part is over, however, and Carlos Condit and B.J. Penn appear headed for a fight later this year. MMAWeekly.com will have more information on the date and location when it becomes available.

Una vittoria per Condit lo porterebbe nella top 5 della division (oltre a dargli una shot che per me già si merita). Match quantomeno interessante e, se davvero accadesse, tiferei Condit spudoratamente.

Ottimo match sulla carta, probabilmente il match più spettacolare possibile a 170 libbre. Forse sarebbe stato però meglio Fitch contro Condit e magari Penn contro Story (o Brenneman), giusto per non fare l'ennesimo wrestler contro wrestler in una categoria in cui il lay and pray domina...

Molto interessato davvero. Ora sono curioso di vedere dove infilano Fitch dopo avergli negato il rematch con BJ... Non vedo nessuno libero a 170 che abbia lo status per affrontare Fitch che per me, non fosse stato per Diaz, sarebbe stato il first contender.

Ora abbiamo da attendere quasi un altro mese per il primo evento UFC... Nel mentre ci saranno due eventi Strikeforce: un challenger e Fedor vs. Henderson ma anche per questo dovremmo aspettare oltre due settimane.

Phil Davis out, Lyoto Machida potentially in against Rashad Evans at UFC 133

BREAKING NEWS: It has been confirmed in the last hour that light heavyweight super-prospect Phil Davis has withdrawn from the main event of UFC 133 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His replacement against Rashad Evans looks set to be Lyoto Machida, the only man to defeat ‘Suga’ in Mixed Martial Arts competition.

As first reported by HeadKickLegend.com, then confirmed to MMABay by numerous sources, Phil Davis has been forced to withdraw from his first PPV main event bout against Rashad Evans in just over three weeks time. Initial reports cite a knee injury as the cause, however there is no word yet as to the specific problem or how serious it is for ‘Mr Wonderful’.

The late withdrawal continues a terrible run of luck for Evans, who has seen injuries to himself and his opponents nix a number of proposed bouts over the past two years. First, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson pulled out of their TUF coaches fight to film ‘The A-Team’, then, after defeating Jackson and waiting almost a year for the injured champion ‘Shogun’ Rua to return, Evans himself was forced to back out due to injury and was replaced by Jon Jones, who went on to defeat ‘Shogun’ for the belt. Evans originally intended to fight Jones for the title at UFC 133, but a convoluted series of events saw the champion replaced by Phil Davis, only to take a bout against ‘Rampage’ Jackson in September.

Innitial reports state that Lyoto Machida will fill the void left in UFC 133’s main event, however at the time of writing this is yet to be confirmed by the UFC. Numerous sources have suggested that the bout is a done deal, however Machida is yet to accept according to Mike Chiappetta of MMAFighting. Interestingly Chiapetta also confirmed that Tito Ortiz was originally offered a chance to take care of unfinished business with Rashad Evans dating back to UFC 73 when the two fought to a controversial draw, but declined.

Should Machida agree to the bout, he will have less than four weeks to prepare for Evans. Regardless, Machida, who trains out of the vaunted Black House, will open as a heavy favourite against ‘Suga’ following a near flawless performance when the two first met at UFC 98 in 2009. Evans was unable to decipher his opponents timing that night, and ended up the victim of a brutal knock-out in the second round.

Spero che non sia così perché Davis era lanciatissimo, comunque non sono assolutamente d'accordo con chi vedrebbe Lyoto favorito. Il primo incontro è andato come è andato ma se Evans dovesse concentrarsi da subito sui takedown o il clintch game penso potrebbe tranquillamente conquistare una decisione, come già fatto con Thiago Silva e Quinton.

Che tristezza... Mi interessava molto quel ME. La notizia non è ancora confermata dalla UFC comunque. Già si parla di Lyoto ma l'incontro perderebbe in interesse (almeno per quanto mi riguarda anche se davvero non ci sono alternative con Rua vs Griffin in programma per UFC RIO ). Certo che Evans è davvero sfortunato: prima accetta l'incontro con Davis perchè Jones era infortunato quando in realtà si scopre che il campione avrebbe lottato a settembre. Rampage si prende la title shot che di fatto aveva perso contro Evans il quale invece si vede cambiare l'avversario a tre settimane dall'evento. Vedo che secondo wiki (il che dovrebbe dire tutto sull'attendibilità del fatto) era stato offerto il posto a Ortiz che ha rinunciato mentre Lyoto avrebbe accettato. Staremo a vedere come si evolve la situazione nelle prossime ore.

Comunque saltato anche Phil Davis v Rashad Evans, e sembra che sia Machida che Ortiz abbiano rifiutato di sostituire Davis che si è infortunato.

*Controllando ora per qualche aggiornamento vedo che è sicuro che Ortiz ha rifiutato, mentre Machida dicono tutti che ha firmato, mentre ad esempio BloodyElbow nell'aggiornamento ha scritto che la cosa è smentita...boh..

**Eh si , a quanto risulta da twitter DW ha confermato che pure il Dragone ha rifiutato e che per ora non c'è avversario per Evans.
E intanto esce anche il motivo per cui Tito ha rifiutato:

Farebbe anche bene Machida, al di là dello scarso preavviso per lui non è un match molto allettante, credo sia impossibile che possa fare meglio del primo incontro...
Vediamo quanto tirerà fuori White per cercare di convincere il brasiliano, se no c'è il vecchio Vlad in card che potrebbe spostarsi in main card.

Ortiz sarebbe stato un pazzo a giocarsi quanto di buono fatto contro Bader a neanche un mese dalla vittoria e dalla sumbission of the night. D'accordo con voi anche per l'analisi fatta su Machida: per lui, bene che vada, le cose rimangono invariate nel senso che non può fare meglio contro Evans di quanto ha già fatto con quelo KO e anche il suo status potrebbe risentirne visto che vedo come un Evans vs Machida potrebbe andare facilmente verso una decisione in una contesa simile a quella fra Rampage e Evans. Questo sarebbe un deciso passo indietro dopo il KO da antologia che Lyoto ha assesstato a Coture a Toronto. E' anche vero che Dana potrebbe offrire un bel pò di dollaroni a Machida attirandolo anche dichiarando ufficialmente Evans vs Machida valevole per la shot al titolo di Jones. Comunque, se Machida rifiuta, Evans è fuori dalla card con Matyushenko vs Gustafsson che andrebbe in main e con Franklin vs Nogueira come ME e Belfort vs Yoshihiro come co ME (anche se è il match che mi interessa di più).

Report: Lyoto Machida and Tito Ortiz Both Turn Down Fight Against Rashad Evans at UFC 133

After original main event fighter Phil Davis was forced out of UFC 133 with an injury, it appears the first two attempts to find a replacement to step in on short notice have turned up no takers.

The first call went out to former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, who was successful in his last bout against Ryan Bader at UFC 132 on July 2.

According to Ortiz, the timing wasn’t right and with other things going on in his life, taking a fight on three weeks notice wasn’t the best option.

“I have a life and things to take care of. The fight game is about making the right choices of my career. If you knew what I have been going through you all would understand. Peaking for a fight is what makes a fighter unstoppable! Timing is everything in life. This is a rebuild year for me not do or die. The time will come again,” Ortiz wrote on his personal Twitter page late Tuesday night.

The other option the UFC was hopeful for was the last person to defeat Evans in the Octagon, former champion Lyoto Machida.

Now, according to both his wife and manager Ed Soares, the Brazilian doesn’t believe he would have enough time to prepare for the bout, and is turning it down as well.

Soares confirmed the news to Tatame.com on Wednesday.

“It won’t happen… I think he doesn’t have enough time to get ready,” Soares said . “I’m at Rio de Janeiro with Jose Aldo, Anderson (Silva) and (Rodrigo) Minotauro. do Joinha (Jorge Guimarães) is dealing with this negotiations, but, from what I know, it won’t happen.”

With Machida and Ortiz seemingly out of the picture, the options appear to be few for the UFC to salvage the UFC 133 main event.

There is a light heavyweight co-main event on the card with Rich Franklin taking on Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, but both fighters are coming off losses and someone would have to step in and replace them if either is yanked to fill the slot in the main event.

UFC matchmaker Joe Silva has a knack for making things happens, now he gets another opportunity to prove it.

Anche Machida rifiuta. Sono d'accordo con chi ha scritto l'articolo: Franklin vs Rogerio non può essere il ME, i due non hanno lo status cosi come Yoshihiro e Belfort (tutti e quattro vengono da sconfitte). Non vedo davvero altri nomi papabili a 205 con Rua già impegnato. Non so che cosa si inventeranno. Non mi stupirei se in qualche modo mettessero un match del tutto nuovo perchè la categoria lightheavyweight è tutta spremuta. Non so dove potrebbero andare a parare dato che è molto difficile fare un incontro da ME con tre settimane di preavviso (se non impossibile). Intanto Evans rischia davvero tanto di non combattere neanche questa volta. Sarebbe un'ingiustizia ma, d'altro canto, non è colpa di nessuno.

Tito Ortiz Will Fight Rashad Evans at UFC 133 After All, According to Dana White

It was the fight that Tito Ortiz simply couldn't be talked into...until he was. Less than 24 hours after explaining via Twitter that he had turned down the fight because he had "a life and things to take care of," Ortiz was in against Rashad Evans at UFC 133 according to a tweet from UFC president Dana White.

"Get ready philly for Rashad Evans vs Tito Ortiz!!! Aug 6th LIVE on PPV at the Wells Fargo Center!!!!!!" White wrote at around 7:30 pm ET.

Ortiz's Twitter response was a more muted one some fifteen minutes before, as he wrote simply, "Only for the UFC!"

The move ended a furious day's worth of speculation about who would fill in for the injured Phil Davis on short notice, with both Ortiz and former UFC light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida reportedly turning down the fight.

Ortiz seemed especially immovable in his initial response, explaining via Twitter:

"I have a life and things to take care of. The fight game is about making the right choices of my career. If you knew what I have been going through you all would understand. Peaking for a fight is what makes a fighter unstoppable! Timing is everything in life. This is a rebuild year for me not do or die. The time will come again! #positive"

Ortiz and Evans first met in the cage at UFC 73 in July of 2007, where they fought to a somewhat controversial draw after Ortiz was docked a point for grabbing the fence to avoid a takedown.

Ortiz would go on to lose three straight before salvaging his UFC career with an upset victory over Ryan Bader at UFC 132 earlier this month. Accepting the fight with Evans means he'll have just five weeks between bouts, and a little over three weeks to prepare, leaving him little time for the "peaking" phase that seemed so vital to him less than a day ago.

As for Evans, the move saves him from having to wait even longer for a fight after sitting out since May of 2010 waiting for his promised title shot, only to have then-teammate Jon Jones take his place after a knee injury sidelined him in the spring.

UFC 133 is slated for the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Penn. on August 6.

A quanto pare Machida ha chiesto di essere pagato come Anderson Silva per accettare l'incontro e ha ricevuto un secco no da Dana che poi ha convinto Ortiz a prendere parte all'evento. Mi dispiace per Tito perchè con così poco preavviso e contro un top fighter come Evans la vedo dura per lui ma del resto è vero che Evans non combatte da un anno e mezzo e in caso di vittoria il "testone" tornerebbe di diritto in corsa per una title shot...

Non parto prevenuto per il main event: Ortiz è fresco dalla grande vittoria con Bader e questo è qualcosa a sua favore perchè il match in sè non è ora per lui qualcosa di inusuale come lo è invece per Evans che, sulla carta, dovrebbe partire da favorito.

Molto curioso di vedere i salari di UFC 133 per capire con quanti dollari Dana è riuscito a far cambiare idea a Tito.
