MMA - Mixed Martial Arts
Re: MMA - Mixed Martial Arts
Can a DUI Break Jonny ‘Bones’ Jones?
Jon “Bones” Jones, like him or not is a truly remarkable fighter with a habit of absorbing minimal damage and making skilled opponents look sloppy. In fact, the minor cuts and bruises Jon suffered this week from his car crash is more damage than Rashad Evans laid on him in their twenty five minute title fight at UFC 145. The damage Jon inflicted upon his own image is going to take longer to heal but heal it can.
Jon Jones as a brand seems to be harder to sell than it should be: a young, athletic fighter who finishes fights, is well spoken and has overcome hardship. The sport of Mixed Martial Arts is not short on such fighters; one fighter who springs to mind although not young is Daniel Cormier. The difference between these fighters seems to be the credibility. Cormier comes across as a humble man who believes in hard work and overcoming adversity to achieve amazing goals. Jones does many things to seem the real deal: he says all the right things in his interviews, is a family man and even foiled a robbery in progress. Somehow, no matter what I can’t bring myself to admire Jon Jones the man as opposed to Jon Jones the athlete. As an athlete, he commands respect and I give to him. I do not necessarily believe Jones is being fake in his interviews but I do believe he is very conscious to say what he believes but in a measured way. Jones is being cautious because he is aware of the power of PR to an athlete’s opportunities outside the sporting realm. Jon has given his image a black eye with his DUI. It will potentially cost himself prospective sponsors not willing to side themselves with a drunk driver with a tendency for driving dangerously, this is his second citation in seven months for vehicular offences.
To compare the public perception of the current Light Heavyweight Champions Jon Jones to one of his predecessors in the great Chuck Liddell, they are very different fighters and people. Chuck always felt like he was a champion of the common man because he said what he felt, he was humble and fought for the love of fighting. You get the sense Chuck would have been as happy beating up Tito Ortiz in a bar for free as he was on PPV. Jones in contrast feels sanitized and I believe this to be the root of his image problem. You get the sense of arrogance from Jon Jones, despite his claims to the contrary. If I had achieved what Jon had, I guess I would be arrogant too. If Jones is arrogant then he needs to embrace it. Tito Ortiz, Ken Shamrock and Brock Lesnar were as arrogant as they come and they forged big dollar careers off the attitude which shone through. If you are arrogant and can back it up like Mohammed Ali did, you will make money. Jones needs to let his guard down so we can see the real Jon “Bones” Jones. It is better to be disliked for who you really are than who you think you should be.
Realistically, there will be little to no meaningful punishment placed upon Jon. He will be represented by a great legal team and has a relatively clean record despite the previous charges. The UFC will not put Jon on the shelf for this indiscretion, not given Quinton “Rampage” Jackson had hit and run incident with high speed pursuit and still kept his job. Ross Pearson got done for DUI earlier this month and faced no punishment. What Jon and Ross both did was reckless and unacceptable. Both fighters are lucky no one else was injured. What Jon needs to do is man up and face the music. He is preparing a statement to be read out, which will be carefully crafted. You get a sense if it was Chuck, he would do a sit down interview and tell us all he was stupid to make such a reckless mistake.
What Jon Has on his side is he is young and this test on his character may show him he has a way to go when it comes to responsibility. I am sure he is thoroughly disappointed in his actions and I am sure his wife and family are disappointed too. Jon will also be aware he is setting a poor example to his young children. We all have made errors in our lives, some more than others. Perhaps this is a turning point for Jones and the way he handles himself outside the cage. The media will punish him, this arrest will dog him for some time to come but it will fade. People will give him chance after chance if they find him likeable. Stephan Bonner, Chris Leben and Chael Sonnen have failed drug tests and are still popular today, in Chael’s case more than ever. It is how Jon responds to this challenge will define him as a fighter and a man. Due to his age, Jones is still developing as a man in the way he carries himself and who he really is. Life has a habit of beating you down to harden you up and this may be a character building lesson.
There is no need to crucify Jones; he will pay a dearer price than Pearson because of a higher profile. I don’t believe this indiscretion will affect his octagon performances either: Jon will continue to dominate. He is too much the consummate athlete and has too strong a team around him not to continue succeeding. Jones will continue as planned against Dan Henderson and will likely walk out as champion yet again. Given the level he has faced, I don’t see anything new Henderson brings to the table which Rashad did not. Jones needs to be real to the people, go out and put on a great show against Henderson and look for the finish, give them a great performance. I have a feeling most people, myself included are looking for Jones to be in a war, a true test of heart like the Shogun / Hendo fight or Griffin / Bonner. He needs a fight where we can see Jon dig deep on courage and determination to fight his way back from the edge of defeat so we can see what he is truly made of. As fans when we see those magic fights, you can’t help but be fans of those fighters afterward.
Of course, the fact Jones has never been in real trouble is not his fault. It up to the challenger to bring the dogfight to the champion. I get a feeling once we see him in a war, Jones’s PR troubles will fade. I know Henderson has a genuine grit in him, we will see if he can drag it from Jones."

Re: MMA - Mixed Martial Arts

Re: MMA - Mixed Martial Arts

Re: MMA - Mixed Martial Arts
Re: MMA - Mixed Martial Arts
Indi ci sta.

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson spectacularly misses weight AGAIN
Former UFC stand-out, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson was fired from the Las Vegas based promotion earlier this year for missing weight by a massive eleven pounds ahead of his UFC 142 clash with Vitor Belfort in January and it seems the powerhouse hasn’t learned his lesson as he almost repeated the trick overnight.
Johnson, who is set to take on David Branch on the Titan Fighting Championship 22 card in Kansas City tonight, stepped on the scales a massive ten pounds over. Johnson reached a deal with Branch to give him $4,000 of his purse for Branch to agreed to the fight.
Although UFC President, Dana White was clearly furious about Johnson’s action when he cut him it was suggested that if he got his act together, made weight and strung a couple of wins together he could very well receive a recall to fight inside the octagon once again. It seems that is a LONG way off right now.
SEMPRE SPETTACOLARE RUMBLE; UAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

Re: MMA - Mixed Martial Arts
Ogni tanto ci sta vedere all'opera solo i bestioni...Struve ottiene un'altra importante vittoria.

Re: MMA - Mixed Martial Arts

Re: MMA - Mixed Martial Arts
Re: MMA - Mixed Martial Arts
Re: MMA - Mixed Martial Arts
Concordo.
