Miguel Torres released from UFC following 'rape van' Twitter post

Miguel Torres (39-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is no longer with the UFC.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed with UFC officials that Torres has been released from the promotion following an inappropriate Twitter post.

White first revealed the move to SI.com.

"Miguel Torres has been cut from the UFC, and his career with us now is over," White told SI.com.

"If a windowless van was called a surprise van, more people wouldn't mind going for rides in them," Torres stated. "Everyone likes surprises."

"There's going be times when things happen and mistakes are made," White told SI.com. "I cannot defend Miguel Torres. I cannot defend what he said. What he said makes no sense other than when he says, 'It was a joke.' Well, I don’t think that’s a funny joke. I think it’s disturbing."

Torres today told HeavyMMA's Matt Erickson the quote was a reference to a line to an FX sitcom, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." Episode No. 2 of the series fourth season took place largely in a van with tinted windows that the characters repeatedly called a "rape van."

The move comes one day after UFC light heavyweight headliner Rashad Evans on Wednesday also made an off-color comment in reference to the recent Penn State sexual abuse scandal. However, White declined to punish Evans for his poor judgment.

"[Evans] said something stupid," White on Thursday told MMAjunkie.com. "It's probably one of the dumbest things you can say.

"He gets it, and he knows it was a stupid thing to say. We'll see what happens."

Forrest Griffin recently found himself in similar hot water after Tweeting, "Rape is the new missionary." Griffin eventually removed the comments after drawing the ire of many of his followers, and he explained to White the comment was meant as more of a social commentary on the prevalence of rape cases in current media coverage. Griffin was not released by the promotion.

Torres fought most recently at November's UFC 139 event, where he earned a unanimous-decision won over Nick Pace. He's probably best known for his stint as WEC bantamweight champion, when he notched three defenses of the belt before surrendering the title to Brian Bowles.

UFC brass have yet to make an official announcement regarding the roster move.

Earlier this year, Zuffa officials rolled out the new bonus program to all UFC and Strikeforce fighters. UFC president Dana White long has been a supporter of the social-media movement and currently boasts nearly 1.7 million Twitter followers.

UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva, former interim heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrgio Nogueira and middleweight contender Demian Maia each recently pocketed $10,000 for winning bonuses in two different categories, while Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and UFC welterweight contender Paulo Thiago each scored $5,000 for earning a win in a single category.

purtroppo non funziona cosi nelle mma.
ad esempio nel pugilato, dove vi sono caalssifiche comunque ufficiali nelle varie federazioni, spesso alla fine vengono superate da decisioni del tutto personali prese da sponsor tv e dirigenti.
figuriamoci in una "disciplina" sportiva come le mma in generale, e l'ufc nel caso particolare.... come si è visto si vede e si vedrà almeno nell'immediato futuro, i meriti sportivi sono solo una parte delle caratteristiche che devi avere per arrivare alla cintura.
in poche parole, possono fare quello che vogliono.
e comunque l'esempio di sonnen è quello meno calzante che puoi trovare, quando (squalifica a parte sia chiaro) una rivincita dopo il loro primo incontro almeno a me sembrerebbe la cosa piu normale da farsi, sportivamente parlando.

Lo so che non funziona in una disciplina come le MMA, dove c'è sola UNA federazione grande e dove gli interessi economici, ormai, superano quelli sportivi.

Per Sonnen, ancora, non sono d'accordo. La rivincita in un match per il titolo, da che mondo e mondo, la si da in 2 casi:
A) perde il campione e quindi si fa quasi immediatamente "la rivincita" in senso stretto (Liddell-Couture 2-3, Faber-Brown 1-2);
B) il match finisce quasi (o ufficialmente) alla pari tipo Edgar-Maynard, o addirittura si perde in modo molto controverso (Machida-Shogun).

Capisco che per tot tempo del match Silva, a molti, è parso in difficoltà, ma il campione HA FINALIZZATO lo sfidante. In casi del genere non esiste che lo sfidante faccia UN MATCH e poi torni al titoli. Per niente. In più mettici che è stato anche squalificato PER DOPING!!!

Silva con il suo infortunio ha sistemato un pò la porcata che white voleva fare e ora Sonnen si fa almeno un altro match dopo sconfitta-squalifica-vittoria passate.


Intanto Cesar Gracie dice che sarebbe ora di privare GSP del titolo... e sinceramente concordo: se davvero ci vogliono altri 10 mesi per il rientro, direi che ci mette più tempo a lottare di nuovo di quanto ci ha impiegato MIR per un incidente in moto.

Confermato per UFC 143 Koscheck v Pierce

Josh Koscheck was scheduled to be Carlos Condit's opponent at UFC 143 until Georges St. Pierre injured his knee and was forced out of his title fight. The UFC decided to match Condit with Nick Diaz for the interim welterweight title. Koscheck was left without an opponent while the UFC was dealing with the fall out of St. Pierre's injury.

During this time Koscheck was attempting to get a fight at 185, even tweeting that he'll have an announcement soon. Looks like the UFC have decided to keep Koscheck busy at weltwerweight with a fight against Mike Pierce. Piece has a grinding style that could cause Koscheck fits. Pierce tweeted, "It's on! KOS tried wiggling outta this one too, but Feb 4th he's mine #ufc#ufc143".

Categoria flyweight (125) annunciata nel weekend

Following a successful lighter-weights season of "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series on Spike TV, the UFC is going even lighter and adding a 125-pound flyweight division.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the long-rumored division – which will be the UFC's eighth – should be announced within the next few days.
"It's happening," he said. "I told you guys it's happening, and it's happening."
When?
"This weekend," White said after Wednesday's UFC on FOX 2 press conference in Chicago (before hopping on a jet to Toronto for this weekend's UFC 140 event). "I should have something by this weekend."

The success of "TUF 14," a first-ever season to feature 135-pound bantamweights and 145-pound featherweights, helped solidify White's decision. The UFC boss has hinted at the implementation of the weight class for about a year, though recent reports suggested the UFC might put the project on the back burner. But White said that won't be the case, and it seems "TUF 14" played a role.

While Diego Brandao won the "TUF 14" featherweight crown this past weekend, John Dodson – a fighter best suited for flyweight, where he's world-ranked – won the bantamweight title in exciting fashion.

"If anything proved how awesome the small guys are it was this season of 'The Ultimate Fighter,'" White said. "How about the finale? The finale was incredible. Diego's (fight) was probably the best one-round fight I've ever seen, and Dodson was just incredible."

Since the UFC first hinted at adopting the weight class, the flyweight division has gone under the spotlight. Tachi Palace Fights, which has the market on 125-pound talent cornered, has competitors such as Ian McCall, Darrell Montague, Jussier da Silva and Ulysses Gomez who have expressed interest in a move to the UFC (with Tachi's blessing).

Additionally, the UFC has a number of guys in its bantamweight division who could make the drop, including Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson. Just don't expect White to force their hand.
"I'm not moving down anybody down," he said. "Those guys can make the decisions themselves, what weight division they want to fight in. But I have a feeling that 125-pound division is going to be as nasty as (155) and (170). There's going to be a lot of talent there."

Additionally, he suggested international-recruiting efforts could land some prized flyweights.
"At 125 pounds, I think you're going to see a lot of Hispanic and Asian fighters now coming to come compete at that weight," he said.

Strikeforce continuerà su Showtime, e DW ha annunciato "grandi cose" per la promotion californiana

At Thursday's UFC 140 pre-event press conference, UFC President Dana White was asked again about the future of Strikeforce, once competition that was purchased by parent company Zuffa earlier this year.
White not only said that Strikeforce will remain in business, but that big things are ahead.
"Just sit and wait and watch what I do. Trust me: it's going to be just fine. Like I said last time when I talked to you guys about this, I'm getting into this and I'm going to handle it. Watch and see."
Strikeforce's deal with Showtime is set to expire in February 2012. The promotion officially announced a January 7th date today and fans are still waiting to hear about when Josh Barnett will battle Daniel Cormier in the Grand Prix finals. They will put their final event of 2011 next Saturday with Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez defending against Jorge Masvidal.
White said that a deal hasn't been signed with the pay-cable provider yet, but that should come "any day now" with Monday potentially as the target for understanding what's next. White was mum on any details, but alluded to the success of the WEC under the Zuffa banner as an example of how it could work. However, the WEC was eventually absorbed by the UFC, so perhaps that wasn't the best example.

Strikeforce officially announced January 7th as the first card of 2012. Luke Rockhold is set to defend his middleweight title against Keith Jardine in the main event of the evening at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas. The Hard Rock was the UFC's home in Vegas prior to making the change of venue and settling in at the Pearl at the Palms Casino.

Rockhold was expected to defend his belt against Tim Kennedy but the Airborne Ranger is sidelined with an undisclosed injury. It was announced last week that Jardine would be taking Kennedy's place as the number one contender. Tim Kennedy is expected to return sometime in March.

The Jan. 7, fight card will also feature two up-and-coming fighters taking on former champions when Robbie Lawler faces Adlan Amagov in a middleweight bout and "King" Mo Lawal takes on undefeated Lorenz Larkin in a light heavyweight bout. Also on the televised portion of the card, Tarec Saffiedine and Tyler Stinson will clash in a welterweight bout. A fifth yet-to-be announced fight will air on the SHOWTIME portion of the event.

Inoltre c'è un rumor dalla TriStar Gym dicono che GSP potrebbe ritirarsi per problemi seri a ripetuti al ginocchio...

Sono molto dispiaciuto per l'infortunio di GSP perchè il suo match con Diaz lo attendevo da tempo ed è un peccato che sia stato ancora una volta rimandato(forse). Condit vs. Diaz è comunque un signor incontro e sarà interessante vedere come gestiranno dopo la questione legata al titolo mondiale.

Bisping vs. Maia dimostra come l'UFC tratti con i guanti bianchi l'inglese. E' vero che finalmente il "conte" affronterà un top 10 middleweight ma sfiderà il tipo di avversario ideale per lui. Maia è un fenomeno del BJJ ed è migliorato decisamente in piedi ma Bisping avrà un grande vantaggio in piedi e potendo contare su una buona takedown defense sarà dura da portare al tappeto. E a quel punto Maia sarà totalmente innocuo. In ogni caso dubito che il vincitore andrà per il titolo subito. Se Sonnen o Munoz sfideranno Silva in estate è evidente che il ragno o il nuovo campione prima della fine dell'anno non lotterebbero una seconda volta e questo significherebbe un anno di stop per Bisping e mi sembrerebbe strano dopo un 2011 con due soli match all'attivo per la storia del TUF.

Non nascondo di essere molto stupito dai pronostici per il main event, i due tre siti che seguo sono molto bilanciati, e diversi danno Lyoto vincitore.
Spero solo sia un bell'incontro, e non qualcosa di pesante come contro Rampage, e che sia competitivo al massimo.


Detto questo, ci sono rumors che vogliono in brasiliano in condizioni precarie, con una non meglio specificata influenza o raffreddore o sinusite.

Temo che sarà una lunga notte per la black house, vedo tutti e 3 i brasiliani sfavoriti partendo dai gemelli Nogueira che per me patiranno molto la maggior stazza dei rivali fino ad arrivare all'epilogo della serata in cui non riesco a figurarmi una vittoria per Machida, potrà essere elusivo quanto vorrà ma la differenza in termini di allungo e imbrazzante.

Lesnar-Overeem potrebbe saltare.

La notizia ha del clamoroso, infatti gira voce negli ambienti UFC che il main event di UFC 141, Brock Lesnar vs Alistair Overeem potrebbe saltare per problemi familiari dell'olandese. Pare sia già stato contattato Frank Mir per la sostituzione.

Tuttavia, pare si stia nascondendo il vero motivo di questa possibile debacle, ovvero la positività di Overeem ad un controllo anti-doping voluto come di consueto dalla UFC.

Ovverosia, come regalare un +1 al record professionistico dell'avversario. Incommentabile.

Ebersole vs Patrick
Più di tutto, sono rimasto a bocca aperta assistendo alla submission defence dell'americano. Ok, Brian ci aveva abituato a ben altro livello di adrenalina, però la sua solidità complessiva è molto molto alta (figlia di un'esperienza fuori dal comune). Quanto al giudizio, era e rimane difficile stabilire un vincitore anche alla luce di una seconda visione dei tre round. Io avrei dato il primo e il terzo a Ebersole, non certo dominante ma quasi sempre in controllo.

Ortiz vs Nogueira
Il re del ground & pound che si fa mettere sotto in questo modo..... Gli manca un incontro alla scadenza del contratto, io glielo farei fare contro un fighter di fascia medio-bassa. Poi guantini appesi al chiodo e tanti ringraziamenti, comunque vada.

Mir vs Nogueira
W-O-W. Nog sottomesso in modo terribile da un Mir che ritengo fosse molto meno intontito di quello che leggo in giro. Ha rischiato di perdere, verissimo, ma a terra si è sempre difeso e Nog è stato battuto laddove ha disposto di chiunque in passato. Pollice altissimo per Mir che, anche alla luce degli altri recenti risultati, meriterebbe una chance titolata molto più del vincente fra Lesnar e Overeem. A meno che The Reem non debba, come si evince dalle ultime indiscrezioni, essere costretto a saltare il match, nel qual caso il main event di UFC 141 dovrebbe saltare completamente (spero che non diano a Lesnar un altro avversario e che spaccino pure il tutto per un title shot bout, sarebbe una gran pagliacciata).

Jones vs Machida
Si, si, ok. Jones è stato scosso dal sinistro di Machida. E allora? Tanto quel colpo alla velocità della luce lo tira solo il brasiliano e, in ogni caso, Jones ha mostrato una signora mascella (tanti sarebbero andati giu dopo quel colpo pulito, Evans in testa). Al secondo round è andato in onda il consueto, sconvolgente "Jonny Jones Show". Imbarazzante la maniera con la quale ha chiuso una sub di forza tremenda, al momento ho addirittura avuto l'impressione che Machida non abbia fatto in tempo a fare il tap. Dan Henderson viene già pronosticato come una specie di nuovo agnello sacrificale e, visto il Jones di questo 2011, non è un'esagerazione immaginarlo tale.

RUMOUR: Alistair Overeem fails pre-fight drugs test, Frank Mir offers to step in against Brock Lesnar at UFC 141

Rumours are swirling today that the last man to hold the Strikeforce heavyweight title, Alistair Overeem has failed a pre-fight drugs test and is set to be yanked from his UFC 141 main event clash with Brock Lesnar which is set for December 30th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The news was brought to light just hours ago after it was noted that “The Reem” appears on the Nevada State Athletic Commissions agenda for a meeting on Monday. At the UFC 140 post fight press conference UFC President Dana White denied the report although former heavyweight champion, Frank Mir was quick to add:

“If the rumors that you’re hearing are true, I wouldn’t mind having to step in for Overeem and taking on Brock. I’m pretty healthy and three weeks isn’t bad turnaround. I only fought a three-minute fight, so I’m feeling pretty good. My wife might not be happy about Christmas but, eh, she can deal with it.”

Mir went on to talk about his impressive first round submission win over fellow grappler, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, saying:

“Nogueira’s a jiu-jitsu black belt, probably the best submissions heavyweight of all time, you know when you get caught in that thing to tap. You know to tap out to that. It’s what happens if you don’t. I had a strong inclination that he was not going to tap, so I took a deep breath and you guys saw what happened.”

UFC President, Dana White reveals Nogueira is one of those fighters he can add to a growing list that probably need to start thinking about retiring from the sport after a tough couple of years inside the octagon.

“You’ve got to look at a guy’s entire career, not just how it’s ending. Big Nog’s been in wars, man. I was at the Pride fight when he fought Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ [Filipovic], and ‘Cro Cop’ was just blasting him with kicks to the body and shots to the head, and then he ends up pulling off that submission win in the second round. He’s had a career where he’s been through wars.

“Big Nog is a nice guy and a guy who I respect, and I know they get pissed off at me when I say this stuff, but again, it doesn’t matter. Unfortunately — or fortunately — I’m the one that makes these decisions. I’m going to have to sit down and talk to him. I don’t want to see him get hurt, or anyone else.”

The big question for this week though is whether Overeem has been pulled from his big fight with Lesnar at the end of the month and if so will Mir be the one to replace him, setting up what could be a fitting trilogy fight with perhaps his biggest rival.

Non sono d'accordo, cavolo. Ora anche Maia non è decente? Uno che abbiamo mandato per il titolo contro Silva, che ha ridicolizzato Sonnen, che ha battuto Groove, Miranda, Miller, Mcdonalds etc, che ha perso contro Munoz poco tempo fa per Decision quando Munoz è quasi first contender, no, non va bene.

Ma a me quella news pare sbagliata. L'appuntamento con la commissione atletica era oggi, come fa a sapersi già che ha fallito un drug test, quando non è neanche confermato che doveva recarsi li per quello?

Non dico che alla fine non succeda, però mi sembra tutto molto approssimativo per ora, contando poi che è nato tutto da un rumor in un post di twitter....


Tornando all'evento, che dire davvero bello bello. Peccato solo per il primo match, si prospettava una bella battaglia ma l'inspiegabile uscita di Hominick è stata davvero un regalo per lo zombie.

Costa Philippou è un animale, cazzo mi ha impressionato un sacco, forse negli ultimi mesi è l'incontro che più mi ha sorpreso. Vedere un veterano e una testa di cuoio come Hamann andare giù colpito da colpi cosi precisi e potenti è stato tanta roba, e vedere il modo in cui il greco in questi 3 incontri in UFC abbia imparato la pazienza e l'arte del scegliere i colpi fa pensare a un gran bel futuro, speriamo non sia l'ennesimo che si perde via.

Tito v Rogerio per fortuna è stato corto e godibile, Lil Nog spero nessuno venga a dirmi che ad oggi è uno dei top LHW perchè a mio avviso ad ogni match dimostra di essere decisamente vulnerabile in piedi, anche con Ortiz ha sembrato accusa il calcio e la combinazione che è seguita. Ovviamente vince, ma tutto sommato era preventivabile.

Mir è un animale, cazzo che lezione che gli ha dato a Nogueira. Diciamo che volendo ci poteva pure stare lo stoppage quando è andato faccia a terra, se forse fosse stato un altro match o un altro arbitro poteva fermarlo, ma col senno di poi sarebbe stato un errore vista l'abitudine di Mir di addormentarsi al primo pugno per poi svegliarsi al secondo. Lo scramble che è seguito a terra è stato una cosa bellissima, son saltato in piedi dal divano come un pazzo negli ultimi 30 secondi. La sub (ma poi perchè TKO? perchè Nog non ha tappato?) è stata una delle cose più brutali che abbia mai visto, e il brasiliano è stato un pazzo a non tappare, ok l'orgoglio ma gli ha frantumato un spalla cristo. Ora spero di non rivederlo più nella gabbia, è palese come il suo tempo sia passato e mi dispiace troppo vedere perdere uno dei miei più grandi fighter di sempre.

Jones....cosa dire, partiamo dal lato extra ring dove mi sta sempre più antipatico, lo trovo una persona che non sa cosa sia il rispetto, se non a parole per poi dimostrare il contrario, e un discreto opportunista. Il modo in cui lascia cadere Lyoto sapendo (parole sue) benissimo come fosse svenuto è una delle mancanze di rispetto più brutte che abbia mai visto, e la figura di merda che fa Jackson nel post match fa capire in che clima e ambiente che viene fatto crescere il campione. Pian piano comincio a capire come mai diversi fighter che rispetto tantissimo a livello umano si siano allontanati dal camp di Jackson negli anni, è sempre stato qualcosa che ho faticato a capire ma ultimamente sta avendo più di una uscita che denota che opportunista e calcolatore che sia il coach.
Per carità, niente di male, ognuno fa quel che vuole, ma personalmente non riesco ad accettare persone del genere, sopratutto quando si riempiono la bocca di grandi parole.

Ora, parlando di quanto visto nella gabbia, davvero impressionante. Nel primo round è in crisi, e chiunque dica il contrario oppure che era tattica è davvero sulla luna, e forse all'inizio del secondo Machida sbaglia a non uscire subito con la combinazione che ha avuto cosi fortuna nel primo (su quattro volte Jones non l'ha bloccata una), però Jonny ha cominciato a tenerlo a distanza coi calci e poi il takedown ha chiuso il tutto, quella gomitata ha battuto Machida.

Peccato perchè più passavano i minuti più ero impressionato da Lyoto, su un altro pianeta a livello di tempismo e capacità di accorciare la distanza, poi è successo quello che è successo.

Di sicuro non voglio togliere nulla al campione, che dimostra di essere uno dei primi tre fighter al mondo pound for pound e che chiude uno degli anni più dominanti della storia dello sport. Dall'altro canto son contento, perchè in questo match si è avuta la riprova che non è sicuramente imbattibile, che a livello di stand up difensivo è molto acerbo e che se l'incontro esce dal suo controllo potrebbe andare in crisi. Vediamo un po chi gli manderà contro l'UFC ora, di sicuro gli sfidanti avranno pane per i loro denti.
