Injury forces Edge to retire

Less than a week after his successful title defense against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania XXVII, World Heavyweight Champion Edge has been forced to retire from in-ring competition due to injury. The unexpected news brings to an end a storied WWE career spanning 13 years and consisting of 11 World Title reigns.

The Rated-R Superstar had been suffering numbness and uncontrollable trembling in his arms and hands. This is not the first time Edge has experienced these symptoms of nueropraxia. An MRI administered at Atlanta Midtown Diagnostic Imaging last Monday was sent to Dr. Joseph Maroon, a renowned neurosurgeon and professor of neurosurgery at The Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After careful examination of the MRI, it was determined that Edge would never be cleared to compete again, and thus, he is forced to retire.

In 2003, Edge underwent a two level spinal fusion of the discs between his C5, C6 and C7 vertebrae. After being cleared to compete, The Rated-R Superstar returned to the ring, resulting in stenosis of the spine, or a narrowing of the spinal column, above and below the fused discs. This narrowing resulted in less and less of the vital fluid needed to protect the spinal cord. Medical professionals cannot clear Edge to compete ever again in WWE since doing so could result in paralysis or even death.

Erano queste le parole che Edge pronunciava ad Alberto Del Rio quando questi parlava del suo destino e di come sarebbe diventato campione a WrestleMania.
E' vero, il destino può davvero cambiare in un batter d'occhio, e ora come ora vien da dire che Edge ha avuto la prova di quanto diceva al suo rivale.

Durante la puntata di Raw, la Rated R Superstar è intervenuta sul ring per dare al pubblico quello che sembra essere l'addio definitivo dal mondo del pro wrestling.
Qui di seguito gli highligts del suo toccante discorso.

World Heavyweight Champion Edge makes his way out to the ring. Edge asks the fans to be patient with him as he’s probably going to ramble. People think WWE doesn’t hurt but that’s not true. Every superstar knows that’s not the case. He says he broke his neck 8 years ago and talks about the surgery to fix him. he knew he has been wrestling on borrowed time. He says he’s been in a lot of pain lately and has been losing feeling in his arms.

Edge says he made it through WrestleMania but WWE wanted him to get more tests done. The MRI results say that he needs to retire. Edge says thankfully the doctors found out whatever they did because he won’t end up in a wheelchair now. The crowd claps for him. He says this is harder than he thought it would be and starts getting emotional. He feels like he’s let people down and talks about Christian. He was upset that is career isn’t ending on his own terms but Christian reminded him that his whole career has been on his own terms. Edge talks about being a big WWE fan like everyone else. Edge says winning his last match at WrestleMania and retiring as World Champion couldn’t be a better way to go out.

He feels like he’s grown up in front of the WWE fans and mentions being in The Brood, being with Christian and other stages in his WWE career. He hopes he has earned the fans respect. He’s tried to give everything he had each night. The fans gave it right back to him. Edge says he is going to miss everything. He says he’s going to eat a bunch of ice cream tonight and doesn’t have to wear tights tomorrow. Edge says if he had the chance, he would do it all over again. Edge thanks the fans one last time and drops the mic. Everyone stands and applauds him. Edge exits the ring and stops on the ramp, posing for the fans. His music finally hits as he walks off and we go to commercial.

- Back from the break and we see during the commercial Edge walking backstage and being applauded by the WWE roster. Goldust is there out of character. Edge hugs and applauds everybody

Spero che smettendo ora non abbia nessuna ripercussione. Gli auguro tutto il bene possibile per il suo futuro lontano dal ring.

Profonda tristezza e delusione, mista a sgomento per l'improvvisa notizia e a candido sollievo per l'operato dei medici che "lo hanno afferrato in tempo". Se solo penso all'eventuale, ennesimo Ladder Match inizialmente previsto per Edge in PPV...mi vengono i brividi. Uno dei miei preferiti in assoluto lascia, non mi viene altro da dire se non grazie...sono ancora sotto shock.

Ma l'importante è che possa continuare a fare l'uomo, c'è chi purtroppo non ha avuto questa possibilità.

Gli ultimi tapings gli ha avuti con SD, quindi sappiamo che non ha combattuto tra martedi e lunedi, a meno che non abbia fatto House show.
Come ho già detto altrove, per ritirarsi pubblicamente così in fretta e furia, probabilmente davvero poteva rischiare grosso se avesse combattuto ancora. Per di più un ladder match.

Ci sto ancora di merda, non tanto per il ritiro in se, ma quanto per il motivo.
Frega niente se non combatte, l'importante per lui è che stia bene di salute.

Personalmente preferisco avere un beniamino vivo e fuori dal ring, piuttosto che un'altra croce su un lungo elenco di persone che sono morte facendo questo "lavoro".

Sta di fatto che Edge, piaccia o non piaccia ha avuto una grande carriera, piena di titoli e di soddisfazioni. ed ha dato tanto all'universo WWE

Mi dispiace che la mia carriera non sia terminata come volevo, ma Christian mi ha ricordato che tutta la mia intera carriera è andata come volevo.[...] Vincere il mio ultimo match a WrestleMania e ritirarmi da campione dei pesi massimi è il modo migliore con cui andarsene.[...]Spero di essermi guadagnato il rispetto dei fans. Ho provato a dare tutto quello che avevo, ogni sera, ed i fan me l'hanno restituito. Mi mancherà tutto questo[...] Se ne avessi la possibilità rifarei tutto di nuovo.

Sono discorsi come questi che mi fanno rispettare sempre di più la figura del wrestler, sia esso l'ultimo jobber della più sperduta Indy o una leggenda da Hall of fame WWE.

In un anno ho perso sia HBK che Edge... una notizia del genere mi devasta. E' un vero fulmine a ciel sereno.

Prima di Mania aveva detto di averne per altri due anni...ora invece mi tocca continuare a seguire questo...Sport enterteinment perndendo un'altro dei personaggi che me l'avevano fatto amare.Era poco più che un bambino quando vedevo questo capellone biondo suonare delle trombette col "fratello", facendo le cover delle altre Theme song.Quando lo vedevo schiantare Jeff Hardy con una Spear da altezza improponibile.Quando l'ho visto litigarsi col fratello il titolo IC e il titolo di King of The Ring.Sono cresciuto vedendolo rasare a zero Kurt Angle,feudare con un altro dei miei idoli,Eddie Guerrero,in una delle rivalità più belle e sottovalutate della storia.Mi sono arrabbiato con lui ai tempi del triangolo con Lita e Matt.Ma ho continuato a tifarlo,come difficilmente si riesce a fare nel Wrestling,fino a gridare di gioia quella notte di gennaio del 2006,quando ha conquistato il suo primo titolo mondiale.E da allora l'ho visto salire sul tetto del mondo altre 10 volte.Posso solo ringraziare di aver visto uno dei miei wrestler preferiti vincere tanto.

Tutto in una sola settimana...

@DUX: io ancora non ci credo, ma mi sa che non siamo di fronte a un work.
Io stesso mi aspetto di vederlo ad Extreme Rules a interferire nel match per il titolo ormai vacante ma mi sa che non accdrà.
Ormai è facile pensare che ogni ritiro "a sorpresa" sia un work dopo quella immane stronzata del ritiro di Cena.
Qui non ci sono match persi, nessun "Loser leave WWE" e nemmeno una storyline dietro, purtroppo.
